故事发生在1973年夏天的格拉斯哥，已经持续了数月的垃圾工大罢工使整个街道都堆满了垃圾，破败的小镇显得凌乱而又萧条，这个夏天对小男孩James来说意味着更多，他的邻居小伙伴Ryan在与自己打闹时不慎溺水身亡，他佯装镇静的背负这沉重的死亡继续成长，而成长也开始在他的生活中呈现出更多的情绪——想要快快长大的孤独、对爱的渴望、落魄的家庭和整日醉醺醺的父亲、对异性的好奇、在年长男孩中所受的屈辱、对美好生活的向往......
