约翰卡朋特出生于纽约一个艺术家庭，其父为音乐教授及乐团指挥。1968年离家赴加拿大攻读电影科，1970年他剪辑、配乐的《布朗科．比利的复活》得到奥斯卡金像奖最佳纪录短片奖。其后他在自己的作品中常兼任编剧、制片、作曲或演员等多职，经过了一段时期的奋斗，在1978年底自筹三十五万美元拍摄恐怖片《月光光心慌慌》，大受欢迎，赚了三千多万美金，从此成了热门导演，并陆续拍摄了多部续集。其它主要还有《怪形》、《妖魔大闹唐人街》、《落入虎口》、《够僵行动》等。 被誉为恐怖片大师和B级片大师。
